How to Care for Your Candle: A Simple Guide to a Better Burn

Caring for your wood wick candle

A little candle care goes a long way. Our candles are hand-poured with a coconut and rapeseed wax blend and finished with a natural wood wick. From the first light to the final burn, these simple habits help you look after your candle.

Always follow the care and safety instructions on your candle label, including its wick length, maximum burn time and when to stop using it.

Trim the wood wick before relighting

Wait until the candle is completely cool and the wax has set. Gently remove the loose, charred wood and trim to the length specified on your candle label. Clear away any wick fragments or ash before lighting. Avoid cutting into the wax or trimming the wick so short that it cannot light.

Give the first burn time to settle

Aim for an even melt pool across the surface during the first burn, while staying within the burn time on the label. Never keep a candle burning beyond that limit just to reach the edges. Let it cool fully between burns.

How to light a wood wick

Hold the flame along the width of the wood wick for a few seconds, keeping your fingers clear of the flame. A gentle crackle can be part of the character of a wood wick. Keep the candle away from draughts so the flame can burn steadily.

Keep each burn within the recommended time

Follow the maximum burn time on the label. If the flame becomes unusually tall, produces persistent smoke or behaves erratically, extinguish the candle and let it cool completely before checking the wick. Never trim or adjust a burning candle.

Burn your candle safely

Use a stable, heat-resistant surface with plenty of space around and above the candle. Keep it away from curtains, other flammable objects, children and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended. Stop using it at the remaining wax level stated on the label; do not burn it down to an empty vessel.

Extinguish gently and let it cool

Use a suitable candle snuffer and check that the flame is fully out. Never use water to extinguish a candle. Leave the vessel in place until the wax has set and it is cool to touch. Once cool, remove loose wick debris and replace the lid if supplied to keep dust out.

Wood wick candle care questions

Why does my wood wick keep going out?

Let the candle cool, then check for loose char or debris around the wick and follow the trimming instructions on the label. A wick cut too short can be difficult to relight. If it still will not stay lit, contact us for candle care help before attempting to alter the candle.

What should I do if my candle starts tunnelling?

Tunnelling leaves a ring of unmelted wax around a deeper central pool. On future burns, give the candle time to form a wider melt pool within the label's burn limit. Do not extend the burn beyond that limit, add extra wicks or try to melt the wax with an oven or microwave. If the problem continues, get in touch with us.

How should I store a coconut and rapeseed wax candle?

Keep your candle upright in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the wax surface free from dust and debris, and check the wick before each use.

When your candle is finished

Once the candle has reached the stop-use point on its label, let it cool completely. Clean the vessel according to its material before reusing it for small keepsakes. Do not pour wax down the sink, and do not reuse a damaged vessel.
